A Practical Guide to Microneedling Treatments for Practitioners

A Practical Guide to Microneedling Treatments for Practitioners

Microneedling is a popular cosmetic treatment that uses thin needles to improve the appearance of the skin. It usually treats the face, but can be administered anywhere on the body.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses tiny needles to create micro-injuries in the top layer of the skin. It is used to improve the appearance of acne scars, enlarged pores, fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks and more.

How Does Microneedling Work?

Microneedling works by creating minute holes in the skin, stimulating the skin’s natural healing process. During this process, the skin produces collagen and elastin, proteins that keep the skin smooth and firm.

The process involves:

  • Topical anaesthetic or ice packs to numb the skin
  • A microneedling roller, derma stamp, or derma pen to penetrate the dermis
  • Micro bleeding from the treated skin
  • Cleansing and aftercare

Microneedling can be done alone, but it is much more effective when paired with a serum (applied before, during and after the procedure) to deliver nutrients to the deeper layers of the skin.

What Are the Benefits of Microneedling?

Microneedling helps to improve the appearance and texture of your skin, including minimising stretch marks, scars, wrinkles and other skin concerns.

It has been shown to be comparable to, or superior to, laser therapies and chemical peels for skin rejuvenation and acne scars. Microneedling has lower complication rates, shorter downtime and greater cost-effectiveness.

Choosing the Right Serum for Microneedling

The right microneedling serum acts as both a lubricant and a way to deliver nutrients to the skin.

A proper lubricant will prevent friction and micro-tears in the skin as you move your roller or pen across the skin’s surface, giving you a uniform result.

The tiny holes that you create can significantly increase the skin’s absorption rates, allowing nutrients into the deeper layers of the skin. It’s important that the serum you use is sterile and has ingredients that focus on hydration, structural support and rapid cellular communication.

Serums suitable for microneedling include peptides, exosomes, PDRN and hyaluronic acid.

The Role of Copper Peptides

Copper peptides are the building blocks of firm skin, telling your skin to produce more collagen and elastin.  They are a powerful but gentle and supportive serum option to pair with your microneedling practice.

Microneedling Aftercare: What Should You Know?

Microneedling will leave skin red, warm and tight. There may be some pinpoint bleeding; this should be cleansed with a sterile wipe. Sheet masks and jelly masks are popular after the procedure, as they help lock in the serum you just applied whilst also helping to cool the skin.

Days 2-3 after the treatment will see peak redness and sensitivity, with some potential swelling around the eyes and forehead. Clients can gently cleanse their face with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water. Apply sunscreen if going outdoors.

Days 4+ will typically mean a return to normality. Clients can reintroduce their actives and their normal skincare routine.
